The Bureau of Fraud Prevention and Prosecution
The Bureau of Fraud Prevention and Prosecution (BFPP) is responsible for conducting investigations into suspected public benefits fraud and abuse as well as performing collection activities for public benefit programs administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS). Listed below are the two investigative positions within BFPP:
Claims Investigation Agent - investigates cash assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps), medical assistance, and other types of welfare fraud cases through interviews and analysis of information obtained. The Claims Investigation Agent also files criminal complaints and assists the District Attorney’s Office in the presentation of the case in court proceedings and participates in administrative hearings. Minimum experience and training for this classification is a bachelor’s degree in pre-law, criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Welfare Fraud Investigator - - - conducts investigations of activities related to fraud, misuse or theft of public assistance monies in an effort to detect, prevent, and deter welfare fraud. Welfare Fraud Investigators are stationed in County Assistance Offices throughout the state and work in partnership with caseworkers to identify applicants ineligible for welfare benefits. Minimum experience and training for this classification is one year of experience in responsible criminal investigation work and a bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Necessary special requirement is possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
